Tahajjud salat (Night prayer)

 

 

This is voluntary prayer, prayed at night, that we are encouraged to pray it. 

 

Allah Most High said, “Establish worship at the going down of the sun until the dark of the night, and (the recital of) the Qur’an at dawn.
Lo! (the recital of) the Qur’an at dawn is ever witnessed.
And some part of the night awake for its recital, as voluntary worship for you. It may be that your Lord will raise you to a praised estate.”
(Qur’an, Al-Isra 17: 78-79)

“And who spend the night before their Lord, prostrate and standing.”(Qur’an, Al-Furqan 25:64) 
There are many narrated hadiths about the merits and benefits of praying Tahajjud salat:
Abu Hurayra (Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Prophet (PBUH) was asked,
“What prayer is most virtuous, after the obligatory prayers?”
He said, “Prayer in the depths of the night.”
(Muslim) Abu Hurairah reports that the Prophet (PBUH) said: “Our Lord Descends to the lowest heaven during the last third of the night, inquiring:

`Who will call on Me so that I may respond to him? Who is asking something of Me so I may give it to him? Who is asking for My forgiveness so I may forgive him?”

(Bukhari and Muslim)

 

Time for praying Tahajjud salat

The scholars derived the following from the Qur’an and prophetic hadiths:

The time of Tahajjud starts after obligatory prayer of Isha finishes till about half an hour before the Fajar Azaan.

Waking up after some sleep.

There is no specific time for this prayer so it may be performed at any time of night. It is consiered that there is a better thiem to read it: DivItide the night in thirds, then the final middle third is most virtuous time for praying. (Durr al-Mukhtar)

Or if the night is divided by half, then the second half is more virtuous. (ibid). 

 

How to pray Tahajjud salat

Tahajjud is a nafl prayer. There is no specific number of rakat of this night prayer The minimal tahajjud salat is TWO rakats. The general practice of the Prophet (PBUH) was EIGHT rakats (praying TWO rakats - FOUR times).It is recommended to shorten the first two rakat making the remaining rakat’s longer. Ending with Witr salat. But lengthier recitation are preferred over larger number of rakats prayed. (Durr al-Mukhtar, Radd al-Muhtar)  

 

Make the Tahajjud part of your routine

As a non-required prayer, the Tahajjud certainly isn't something that any Muslim should feel compelled to do. However, many Muslims choose to practice the Tahajjud on a regular basis (if not every night) when they are able. Like all forms of prayer, saying the Tahajjud brings the person praying closer to God. In addition, the Tahajjud is often associated with God's gifts of forgiveness and redemption.

 

 

 


Salat al-Istikharah

 

 

Istikharah (Arabic word) means to ask Allah to guide one towards the right path concerning any affair in one’s life. Prayed to help make the right decisionIf you are unsure, indecisive or are about to take a major decision in life and are choosing between permissible alternatives. It is advised to seek Allah’s guidance and wisdom before taking that step Allah has provided a specific prayer, Salat al-Istikharah, to aid our direction, as Allah (SWT) alone knows what is best for us and there may be good in what we perceive as bad, and bad in what we perceive as good.  

 

It is a volunteer prayer and an important prayer, it was a sunnah of the Prophet (PBUH) to do this when he needed Allah (SWT) to guide him towards an action. Decisions such as a:

  • proposed job
  • a possible marriage partner
  • a relocation
  • a business venture
  • a choice between two properties.

You might have a bias for one but need assistance in making the right choice, big or small.

 

Salat al-Istikharah is a powerful tool that Allah has given us to ask His guidance in all matters. When seeking it sincerely - we must be resolved to follow that guidance, even if it goes against our own desired choices. It is important when saying the du’a - say it with firm conviction, not begging or pleading, seeking Allah’s clear guidance.  

 

Please note there are many misconceptions about Istikharah:• We should not be impatient after our du’a.•  Expectations should be realistic and should not expect some sort of miracle, a dream full of signs, symbols and feelings. But it is in how Allah facilitates an individual after he or she genuinely strives to do what is best. Allah my answer you by closing certain door and opening the one’s that facilitate the right path.•    Also take measures to help in this decisions process which includes consulting those whose knowledge and wisdom one has confidence in, and place your trust in Allah.•  

 

It is important to note - being patient in this process:
“The supplication of everyone is granted as long as he does not show haste and does not say that he made a supplication but it was not accepted.”

 

[The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah] The Prophet (PBUH) used to teach us the way of doing Istikharah, in all matters as he taught us the Surahs of the Qur’an. He (PBUH) said, “If anyone of you thinks of doing any job he should offer a two Rakat prayer other than the compulsory ones and say (after the prayer):[Bukhari Narrated Jabir bin ‘Abdullah]  

 

How to pray salat al-Istikharah

Offer a two rakat salat other than the compulsory ones (sunnah or nafil) and (after the prayer) recite the passage below.

NOTE: When making the du’a, the actual decision or matter should be mentioned instead of the words “hathal-amra” (“this matter”).  

 

Istikharah Du’a

Allaahum-ma inni astakheeruka bi ‘ilmika

O Allah, I ask you to show me what is best through Your knowledge

wa astaqdiruka bi qudratika

and I ask You to empower me through Your Power

wa as ’aluka min fadlikal ‘azeem.

and I beg You to grant me Your tremendous Favour

Fa innaka taqdirfor

You have Power

wa laa aqdir,

while I am without power

wa ta’lamu

and You have Knowledge,

wa laa a’lam,

while I am without knowledge

wa anta ‘allaam al-ghuyoob.

and You are the One who Knows the unseen.

Allaahum-ma inkunta ta’lamu O Allah,

if you Know

in-na haadhal-amra khayrul-lee

(the matter should be mentioned by name) that this is good for

fi deeni

my Deen/

Faithwa ma’aasheeand

my livelihood

wa ‘aaqibati amree

and the perspective of the eventual outcome of my matter

sao’ aajili amree wa aajilihee

in the world and the Hereafter

faqdurhu li

then destine it for me

wa yass-sirhulee

and make it easy for me

thumma baarik li fihi.

and put Blessing in it.

Wa inkunta ta’lamu

and if in Your knowledge

an-na haadhal amra shar-rul-lee

(the above) is to be of bad consequences for me

wa ‘aaqibati amri

and the perspective of the eventual outcome of my matters

Ao‘aajili amri wa aajilihiIn

then distance it from me

wa usrifnee ‘anhu

and distance it from me (then take it away from me)

waq dir-lial khayr

and arrange goodness for me

haithu kaana

where ever it is

thum-ma-aradinee bihi

and keep me pleased with that.
